Juliet Starr (nee Murray) was Emily Byrd Starr's late mother, once a member of the wealthy and proud Murray family. But she was disowned for eloping with Douglas Starr, someone the family didn't approve of because he was a poor writer with "nothing but his pen and his ambition". She died when Emily was 4 years old of consumption.

Early life

Marriage with Douglas Starr
Edit
Juliet met Douglas, who was working as a sub-editor for the Enterprise newspaper, while in her last year at Queen's Academy. They fell in love but the Murray family disapproved of this match. Nevertheless, the two married (without the Murrays' blessing) and bought a house in Charlottetown where they settled and where Juliet later gave birth to her daughter Emily a year later.
Death
Edit
When Emily was four years old, Juliet fell sick with consumption and died. Douglas, left on his own to care for Emily, took her with him and moved to Maywood and raised her there where he taught her himself and encouraged her interest in literature and in creativity.
